Frequently Asked Questions

Hormone Therapy & BHRT

What is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)?
BHRT uses hormones structurally identical to those produced by the body and may be prescribed for perimenopause, menopause, or testosterone deficiency, thyroid disease, PCOS and other hormonal insufficiencies, as clinically indicated. Treatment is individualized and carefully monitored.

Is hormone replacement therapy safe?
Hormone therapy can be safe and effective when prescribed within physiologic ranges and supported by proper screening and ongoing monitoring. Risks, benefits, and alternatives are reviewed before treatment begins.

Do you offer non-hormonal menopause treatment?
Yes. Non-hormonal menopause management, including prescription options, vaginal therapies, metabolic optimization, psychotherapy, mineral/vitamin and nutrition supplements, and lifestyle strategies. If not available at ClearAccess, appropriate referral may be offered.

Perimenopause & Menopause Care

What are common perimenopause symptoms?
Irregular cycles, anxiety, sleep disturbance, brain fog, weight changes, and reduced stress tolerance are common during hormonal transition.

How do I know if I need a menopause assessment?
If symptoms are affecting your quality of life, a comprehensive menopause evaluation can clarify whether they are hormonally driven and identify appropriate treatment options.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT)

What are symptoms of low testosterone?
Fatigue, low libido, decreased muscle mass, mood changes, and reduced motivation may indicate testosterone deficiency. Diagnosis requires both symptoms and laboratory confirmation.

Do you prescribe high-dose testosterone or anabolic steroids?
No. Testosterone therapy is provided only when medically indicated and within safe, physiologic replacement ranges.

If I want biological children in the future, can I take testosterone

Testosterone therapy can suppress sperm production and may impair fertility while on treatment. For men planning future biological children, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is generally not recommended. Fertility goals are reviewed before starting treatment. When appropriate, alternative options that support natural testosterone production, such as human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)-based therapy, may be discussed. Protecting long-term reproductive health is a priority.

Metabolic Health & Weight Management

Do you prescribe GLP-1/GIP medications for weight loss?
When appropriate, GLP-1–based medications may be incorporated into a structured medical weight management plan with metabolic monitoring.

Is weight gain related to menopause?
Hormonal changes can influence body composition, insulin sensitivity, and muscle mass. A comprehensive metabolic assessment helps guide sustainable fat loss strategies.

What is a Nurse Practitioner (NP)?
A Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner is a Registered Nurse who has completed advanced graduate education (Master of Nursing) and extensive clinical training. NPs first earn a nursing degree and gain years of hands-on experience before completing their Master’s degree. They are authorized to diagnose conditions, order and interpret tests, prescribe medications, and manage acute and chronic health concerns independently within regulated professional standards.

Are services at ClearAccess Health covered by OHIP?
No. Services are privately billed and are not covered by OHIP. Nurse Practitioners in Ontario working in independent practice are not able to bill directly to OHIP. Some patients may use extended health benefits or a Health Spending Account. Coverage varies by plan. Please confirm with your insurer.

Are medication costs included?
No. Medication costs are separate from professional service fees and are dispensed by your pharmacy of choice depending on treatment.

Is the clinic virtual or in-person?
The clinic currently operates virtually. In-person care is planned in the future.

Do you see children?
No. Care is provided for adults only.

Do you offer episodic and chronic care visits?

Perimenopause & Menopause

Hormonal transition can affect multiple systems in the body. Symptoms may be subtle at first and often evolve over time.

Common Symptoms:

Cycle Changes

  • Irregular periods

  • Heavier or lighter bleeding

  • Shorter or longer cycles

Vasomotor Symptoms

  • Hot flashes

  • Night sweats

  • Temperature intolerance

Mood & Cognitive Changes

  • Anxiety or irritability

  • Low mood

  • Brain fog

  • Reduced concentration

Sleep Disturbance

  • Difficulty falling asleep

  • Waking between 2–4 AM

  • Non-restorative sleep

Physical & Metabolic Changes

  • Weight gain (especially abdominal)

  • Reduced muscle mass

  • Joint pain or stiffness

  • Fatigue

Genitourinary Symptoms

  • Vaginal dryness

  • Pain with intimacy

  • Recurrent urinary discomfort – frequency or incontinence

  • Decreased libido

Every woman’s experience is different. Not all symptoms require hormone therapy, but all deserve proper evaluation. If these symptoms sound familiar, a comprehensive menopause assessment can help clarify the cause and identify safe, individualized treatment options.

Low Testosterone (Low T)

Testosterone levels gradually decline with age, but some men experience symptoms that significantly impact energy, strength, mood, and sexual health.

Common Symptoms:

  • Persistent fatigue

  • Decreased muscle mass

  • Increased abdominal fat

  • Reduced stamina

  • Low libido

  • Fewer morning erections

  • Erectile changes

  • Low motivation

  • Irritability or low mood

  • Brain fog

  • Poor sleep

Not all symptoms are caused by low testosterone. A comprehensive evaluation includes symptom review, laboratory testing, and cardiometabolic risk assessment to determine whether testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is appropriate.
